For one day, the pupils of the ninth grade of the Friedrich-Magnus-Gesamtschule in Laubach got to know the professional world of the metal and electrical industry. In the “ME-Berufe-Stream” of HESSENMETALL Mittelhessen, the young people of the secondary school were given an insight into the diverse training opportunities in Germany’s largest industrial sector via video conference. The format was supported by trainees from Römheld GmbH Friedrichshütte in Laubach.
“Company internships, career guidance, trade fairs and training events are currently cancelled due to the pandemic. This also applies to the M+E Info Truck of the metal and electrical industry. Fortunately, we could set up a good substitute offer for the pupils with the new livestreams. Because career orientation must not be neglected, especially in the current situation,” said Sebastian Höhn, consultant for securing skilled workers and vocational training at HESSENMETALL Mittelhessen.
The livestreams use multimedia presentations to provide insights into the diversity of more than 40 apprenticeships in the M+E industry
Videos and digital tools were used to make the lesson interactive for the young people. The pupils got to know the new app “M+E Berufe” (M+E professions) and took part in surveys with their smartphones and used the opportunity to ask questions directly to the live trainees. They also received practical tips on applying for jobs and training in Hessen’s largest industrial sector.
Carsten Schäfer, head of human resources and trainer in the commercial sector, informed via live broadcast about the training and study opportunities at ROEMHELD. “Young people who apply for an industrial apprenticeship at our company should have a secondary school diploma and enjoy technology and tinkering. A good understanding of maths and physics is also required.”
Applicants for our commercial apprenticeships need an advanced technical college certificate, or even better, a high school diploma, and enjoy working with people. As a family-run company in Laubach/Ruppertsburg in Central Hessen, we offer a wide range of apprenticeships, e.g.:
- cutting machine operator
- metal technology specialist
- electronics technician for industrial engineering
- technical product designer
- or specialist for warehouse logistics.

The subsequent presentation was given by the tree trainees Mona Luft, Tobias Raab and Tim Luca Ullrich, all in training as second-year industrial mechanics. Apart from the presentation of the training environment and the diverse activities, the trainees described their personal careers and answered the participants’ questions.
